Start with your strengths

Changing career without starting again from zero

A change of direction does not mean throwing away what you have built. It means choosing which parts of your experience matter most in the next chapter.

Get clear on what you want to change

Be specific about what is not working. Is it the work itself, the sector, the employer, the level of responsibility or the way you are managed? Different answers point to different moves, and not all of them need a complete change of career.

Identify your transferable strengths

List what you do well that is not tied to one industry: managing stakeholders, solving problems, analysing information, leading projects, negotiating, communicating clearly. These travel with you.

Our free Career Values Quiz is a useful place to start when you are not sure where to begin.

Test the direction before you commit

Talk to people already doing the work. Ask what a typical week looks like, what they would change and what surprised them. A handful of conversations will tell you more than weeks of searching online.

Tell the story in one clear thread

Employers worry about risk. Reduce it by showing the thread that connects your past to this move: what you have done, why you are drawn to this next step and what evidence you have that you can do it.

Reposition your CV and LinkedIn

Rewrite your profile around the new direction, lead with the transferable achievements and use the language of the role you want. A strong, honest summary at the top makes the move easy to follow.

Frequently asked questions

Am I too experienced to change career?

Experience is an asset. The aim is to show how it applies to the new role rather than to hide it.

Will I have to take a pay cut?

Not necessarily. It depends on how closely your skills match the new role and the sector. Research typical pay for the role before you decide.

Do I need to retrain first?

Sometimes, but many moves rely on transferable skills and a clear story. Speak to people in the field to learn what is genuinely required.

How long does a career change take?

It varies. Allow time for research, conversations and repositioning your profile, and treat it as a project with small steps.
